The Shield is the best Plex client hardware. Here's how to set it up, optimize playback, and fix common issues.
The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is widely considered the best Plex client device. It supports 4K HDR, lossless audio passthrough (TrueHD, DTS-HD MA), and has the processing power to direct play virtually any format — which means your server doesn't have to transcode.
Install Plex from the Google Play Store on the Shield. Sign in with your Plex account. Add your server. That's the basics — but the defaults aren't optimal. Here's what to change:
For lossless audio, go to Shield Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced Sound Settings → Available Formats → select Manual and check all the codecs your receiver supports (TrueHD, DTS-HD, Atmos, etc.). In Plex, set Audio → Allow Passthrough to On.
Organize your media with proper naming (Movie Name (Year)/Movie Name (Year).mkv) so the Shield's Plex app can fetch metadata quickly. Enable the Shield's integrated Plex Media Server only if you're using the Shield AS the server — otherwise disable it to free up resources for the client.
