Plex started as a video player, but its music capabilities have quietly become one of its best features. Plexamp — Plex's dedicated music player — is genuinely excellent: gapless playback, loudness leveling, offline sync, and a UI that music nerds love. But getting music right on Plex requires more careful setup than video.
Why Plex for Music?
If you have a local music collection (FLAC, ALAC, MP3, or any format), Plex + Plexamp gives you:
- Your own streaming service from your library, accessible anywhere
- Plexamp as a dedicated player on iOS, Android, desktop, and web
- Gapless playback for live albums and DJ mixes
- Loudness leveling so you don't blow out your ears switching between albums
- Sonic features: Sweet Fades (crossfade), Silence Between Tracks control, tempo adjustment
- Offline sync to your phone for airplane mode or saving data
- Lyrics support (integrated with several lyrics providers)
Setting Up Your Music Library
Folder structure
Plex is stricter about music organization than video. The recommended structure:
/Music/Artist Name/Album Name (Year)/01 - Track Name.flac- Example:
/Music/Radiohead/OK Computer (1997)/01 - Airbag.flac
The most important thing: one folder per album, inside one folder per artist. If you dump all your music into a flat folder, Plex will make a mess of the metadata.
Tagging matters more than filenames
Plex reads embedded ID3/Vorbis tags, not just filenames. If your tags are wrong, Plex will display wrong metadata no matter how your folders are organized. Use MusicBrainz Picard to auto-tag your entire library — it matches audio fingerprints to its database and writes correct tags.
Key tags Plex uses: Artist, Album Artist, Album, Track Number, Disc Number, Year, Genre. Missing or inconsistent Album Artist tags cause the most problems — compilations end up scattered across individual artist pages.
Creating the library in Plex
- Add Library → Type: Music
- Point it at your music folder
- Agent: Choose "Plex Music" (the default modern agent) — it uses MusicBrainz + Plex's own metadata
- Scanner: "Plex Music Scanner"
- In Advanced: set "Prefer local metadata" if your tags are well-maintained — this prevents Plex from overwriting your careful tagging with online data
Plexamp Setup
Plexamp is a separate app from the main Plex player. Download it from plex.tv/plexamp for your platform.
Requirements
- Plex Pass required for Plexamp
- Works on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and as a headless player (great for a dedicated music endpoint)
Key settings to configure
- Streaming quality: Settings → Playback → Audio Quality. For local network, set to "Original" to get lossless FLAC passthrough. For mobile, "High" (320kbps) balances quality and data usage.
- Loudness leveling: On by default. Uses ReplayGain-style analysis so quiet folk albums and loud rock albums play at the same perceived volume.
- Gapless playback: On by default. Essential for live albums, classical, and electronic music.
- Offline sync: Long-press an album or playlist → "Make Available Offline." Plexamp downloads it to your device in whatever quality you've set.
Audio Formats and Transcoding
Unlike video, music transcoding is lightweight — even a Raspberry Pi can transcode audio without breaking a sweat. But for audiophiles, you want to avoid it:
- FLAC → Direct Play: Plexamp on all platforms supports FLAC natively. No transcode needed.
- ALAC (Apple Lossless): Direct play on iOS/macOS. May transcode on Android/Windows, but the quality loss from transcoding lossless to lossless is negligible.
- DSD/SACD: Plex will transcode these to PCM. If you're serious about DSD playback, you'll need a dedicated player like Roon.
- MP3/AAC/OGG: Direct play everywhere. These are already compressed — Plex won't transcode unless you set a lower quality limit.
Smart Playlists and Discovery
Plexamp has built-in discovery features that make your existing library feel new:
- Sonic Adventure: An AI-generated radio station that finds connections between songs in your library
- Time Capsule: Resurfaces albums you haven't played in a while
- Recently Added: Shows what's new in your library
- Genre/Mood/Decade stations: Auto-generated from your library's metadata
The better your tags and metadata, the better these features work. Invest 30 minutes in MusicBrainz Picard and the discovery features go from useless to genuinely good.
Common Issues
Albums split into multiple entries
The #1 music library complaint. Cause: inconsistent "Album Artist" tags. If one track says "Various Artists" and another says "VA," Plex splits them. Fix: use MusicBrainz Picard to normalize tags, then rescan the library.
Wrong album art
Plex pulls art from online sources. To use your own: place a cover.jpg (or poster.jpg) in each album folder. Set the library to prefer local metadata.
Plexamp can't find the server
Same networking requirements as regular Plex. Ensure remote access is enabled if you're outside your network. If Plexamp connects locally but not remotely, it's a remote access issue, not a Plexamp issue.
Gapless playback not working
Gapless requires the audio to be direct-played, not transcoded. If you're transcoding (because of quality limits or format incompatibility), you'll hear gaps. Fix: set streaming quality to "Original."
Headless Plexamp (Dedicated Music Endpoint)
Plexamp can run in headless mode on a Raspberry Pi or any Linux box, turning it into a dedicated music streamer. Connect it to your stereo via USB DAC and control it from your phone. It's a surprisingly good audiophile streaming setup for under $50 in hardware.
