How to Set Up a Plex Music Library: Tagging, Organization, and Plexamp
Why Plex for Music?
Streaming services are convenient until they remove your favorite album, raise prices, or shut down entirely. A Plex music library gives you permanent access to music you own, organized exactly how you want it, with features that rival dedicated music apps.
File Organization and Folder Structure
Plex expects a specific folder hierarchy for music:
Music/
Artist Name/
Album Name (Year)/
01 - Track Name.flac
02 - Track Name.flac
This structure isn't optional — it's how Plex matches your files to metadata databases. Deviating from it causes mismatches, duplicate entries, and missing artwork.
File Naming Best Practices
- Track number prefix: Always include two-digit track numbers (01, 02) for correct sort order
- Artist folders: Use the primary artist name, not "Various Artists" for compilations
- Album folders: Include the year in parentheses for disambiguation
- File format: FLAC for lossless, MP3 320kbps or AAC 256kbps for lossy — Plex handles all common formats
Tagging with MusicBrainz Picard
Tags embedded in your files are the single most important factor for a clean library. MusicBrainz Picard is free, open-source, and connects to the largest music metadata database:
- Download Picard from musicbrainz.org
- Add your music folder — Picard scans and fingerprints each file
- Review matches, fix any misidentified tracks
- Save — tags are written directly into the files
Critical tags: Artist, Album Artist, Album, Track Number, Disc Number, Year, Genre. Missing any of these causes Plex to create duplicate or orphaned entries.
Plexamp: The Dedicated Music Player
Plexamp turns your Plex server into a Spotify-like experience with features streaming services don't offer:
- Sonic Analysis: Plexamp analyzes your entire library for tempo, key, mood, and loudness — enabling smart playlists that actually sound good together
- Gapless playback: Essential for live albums and classical music
- Loudness leveling: Normalizes volume across tracks without clipping
- Offline sync: Download playlists to your phone for offline listening
- Radio stations: AI-generated radio based on a seed track, using your own library
Lyrics Integration
Plex supports embedded and fetched lyrics. For the best experience:
- Embed lyrics in your FLAC/MP3 tags using tools like MusicTag or Mp3tag
- Enable the LyricFind agent in Plex settings for automatic lyric fetching
- Plexamp displays synchronized lyrics (karaoke-style) when available
Smart Playlists and Collections
After sonic analysis completes, create smart playlists based on:
- Mood: "Chill evening" playlist filtered by low tempo and minor key
- Decade: Automatically collect everything from the 1990s
- Recently added: A playlist that updates as you add new music
- Most played: Your personal top tracks, updated dynamically
Smart playlists update automatically as your library grows. Set them once, enjoy forever.
Common Problems and Fixes
Duplicate albums appearing
Usually caused by inconsistent "Album Artist" tags. Compilations should have "Various Artists" as Album Artist with individual track artists in the Artist field.
Missing artwork
Plex checks embedded artwork first, then online databases. Embed artwork using Picard or Mp3tag for reliability. Recommended: 1000×1000px minimum, saved as cover.jpg in the album folder as fallback.
Tracks out of order
Check that track number tags are correct. Multi-disc albums need both Disc Number and Track Number tags set properly.
