Plex Collections and Smart Playlists: Organize Your Library Automatically
Collections vs Playlists: What's the Difference?
Collections group content within a library — like putting movies into a "Marvel" folder. They appear as browseable categories. Playlists are ordered lists that span libraries — you can mix movies, shows, and music in one playlist. Both can be manual or smart (auto-updating).
Creating Smart Collections
Smart collections use filters to automatically include matching content. In Plex Web, go to your library → Manage → Smart Collections → New.
Useful filter examples:
- 4K HDR Movies: Resolution = 4K AND HDR = true — instantly find all your best-looking content
- Unwatched Highly Rated: Unplayed = true AND Rating > 7.0 — your personal watchlist, auto-curated
- Recently Added TV: Added within last 30 days AND Type = Show — keep up with new additions
- Holiday Movies: Genre contains "Holiday" OR Genre contains "Christmas" — seasonal collections that populate themselves
- Director Collections: Director = "Christopher Nolan" — auto-collect as you add films
Collection Display Modes
Collections can display as:
- Default: Shows within the regular library view with a collection badge
- Hide items: Items only appear inside the collection, reducing clutter in the main view
- Show collection and items: Both the collection and individual items appear in the library
Best practice: Use "Hide items" for franchise collections (Star Wars, MCU) to keep your library browseable. Individual films still appear in search and recommendations.
Smart Playlists
Smart playlists update automatically as your library changes. Key difference from collections: playlists have an order, and they can cross library boundaries.
Music smart playlists
- Top 100 Most Played: Sort by play count, limit to 100 — your personal chart
- Never Played: Play count = 0 AND Added > 30 days ago — rediscover forgotten additions
- High Energy Workout: Tempo > 120 BPM AND Mood = "Energetic" (requires sonic analysis)
Video smart playlists
- Short Films Night: Duration < 30 minutes AND Rating > 7.0
- Continue Watching: In Progress = true, sorted by last viewed date
Collection Ordering and Sorting
Collections can be sorted by:
- Release date (chronological viewing order)
- Title (alphabetical)
- Rating (best first)
- Custom order (drag and drop)
For franchise collections, custom order lets you set the ideal viewing sequence — release order or chronological story order, your choice.
Sharing Collections
Collections you create are visible to all users with access to that library. Use this to curate experiences for different viewers — a "Kids Approved" collection, a "Date Night" collection, or a "New This Week" collection that updates automatically.
Maintenance Tips
- Review smart collection filters quarterly — metadata changes can exclude items unexpectedly
- Use the "Broken" smart filter (file missing, corrupted) to catch storage issues early
- Pin your most-used collections to the home screen for quick access
- Name collections clearly — "Action Movies" beats "My Collection 3"
