How to Use Plex Collections to Organize Your Library Like a Pro
A 2,000-movie Plex library without collections is like a bookstore with no shelves. Collections turn chaos into something you actually want to browse.
Manual vs Smart Collections
Manual collections are curated by you. Drag specific movies or shows in. Good for franchises (all MCU films in order), director retrospectives, or “Family Movie Night” picks.
Smart collections auto-populate based on rules: genre, year, rating, resolution, studio, or any combination. “4K Action Movies rated 7+” updates itself as you add new content.
Essential Collections to Create
- Franchise collections: Star Wars, MCU, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. Manual, ordered chronologically or by release date
- Resolution collections: 4K, 1080p, 720p. Smart filter on resolution. Useful when someone asks “what do you have in 4K?”
- Recently Added: smart collection, sorted by date added, limited to 50 items. A “what’s new” shelf
- Highly Rated: smart collection, audience rating > 8.0. Your library’s greatest hits
- Kids: smart filter on content rating (G, PG). Essential if you share your server with families
Collection Display Settings
Go to your library > Manage Library > Advanced. Set “Minimum automatic collection size” to control when Plex auto-groups. Set collection sort to “Release Date” for franchises.
Collection Art
Custom collection posters make your library look professional. Good sources: ThePosterDB, MediUX, or create your own in Canva. Upload via the collection’s edit screen > Poster tab.
